Bidspirit auction | Song Dynasty, Yaozhou Kiln Celadon

Song Dynasty, Yaozhou Kiln Celadon Bowl with Incised Carved Decoration - This bowl features a flared, slightly everted rim, deep curved sides tapering downward, and a neat foot ring. The overall silhouette is streamlined and upright with harmonious proportions. The interior is decorated with carved and incised floral motifs, the main blossoms and leaves rendered in sweeping, curling forms with veins expressed through fine combed incisions. The cutting is sharp and fluid, varying in depth to create subtle three-dimensional layers that emerge and recede beneath the translucent glaze. The exterior is carved with chrysanthemum petals arranged in neat, radiating rows from rim to foot, simple yet rhythmical. The entire vessel is covered in an olive-green celadon glaze of deep, even tone, lustrous and translucent with a strong vitreous quality. The glaze thins at the rim to reveal a pale greyish-white clay body, creating a light-colored edge band, while the unglazed foot rim exposes a fine, compact greyish-white body with traces of kiln-support firing. The glaze surface shows occasional fine crackles and scattered pinprick bubbles, adding an authentic, time-worn character. The piece demonstrates consummate carving skill with dense yet orderly decoration, the glaze and patterns enhancing one another to fully reveal the distinctive charm of Yaozhou carved celadon ware.
