Song Dynasty, Yaozhou Ware Auspicious Beast Oil Lamp - The beast crouches with head raised, jaws open in a powerful yet lively expression. Its body is robust and well-proportioned, limbs sturdy and sure; every line flows smoothly and the detailing is vivid and expressive. A bowl-shaped lamp, carved with vertical chrysanthemum petal patterns, rests securely on its back—uniting striking form with practical function. Covered throughout in the characteristic olive-green glaze of Yaozhou, rich, lustrous, and deep in tone; the pale, honest body shows only at the foot. Ingenious design and fine craftsmanship make this a truly distinctive and impressive work from the Song Yaozhou kilns.
