Bidspirit auction | Song Dynasty, Ding Ware White
Song Dynasty, Ding Ware White Glazed Double-Handled Ewer - This jar presents a full, rounded form with a small, slightly flared mouth, a short neck, broad shoulders, and a generously swollen ovoid body tapering down to a ring foot. The unglazed foot rim reveals a fine, compact, buff-colored clay body. Two small, symmetrical lugs are applied to the shoulders, each arched gracefully with a circular perforation at the top for threading a cord, and the attachment points where the lugs meet the shoulder are seamlessly integrated with meticulous craftsmanship. The entire vessel is covered in a warm ivory-white glaze, characteristic of Ding ware's signature tone. The glaze surface is lustrous and smooth with a moderate vitreous quality, marked by occasional pinprick bubbles and scattered iron specks that lend an authentic, time-worn naturalness. The glaze is evenly applied but stops short of the base, leaving the lower belly and foot ring unglazed, where traces of wheel-turning and kiln-support marks are visible. Completely devoid of carved or incised decoration, the piece achieves its beauty through the purity of its glaze and the satisfying fullness of its form, with flowing, harmonious proportions that embody the serene and dignified elegance of Ding white porcelain.
