Bidspirit auction | Hongshan Culture, Magatama Pendant

Hongshan Culture, Magatama Pendant - This pendant is fashioned from a flattened, rectangular jade plaque of creamy-white tone with yellowish undertones, partially altered to greyish-brown in areas. The stone is warm, fine-grained, and bears a rich, mellow patina. The silhouette is shaped into a symmetrical hook-cloud form through openwork and incised techniques, with hooked projections extending from the four corners and both sides, creating flowing, rhythmic contours. The center is pierced with a double hook-cloud motif of abstract, simplified design that loops and interlocks with dynamic, mystical energy. The surface is smoothly polished with fine abrasion marks visible upon close inspection; the edges are rounded without sharpness. Small perforations at the upper and lower ends exhibit a honeycomb or trumpet-shaped profile, characteristic of the solid-drill (ting) technique typical of Hongshan culture jade work. The overall form is archaic and robust, with expansive, fluid lines that convey a sense of grandeur through simplicity, fully demonstrating the unique aesthetic sensibility and masterful jade-carving craftsmanship of the Hongshan culture.
