Bidspirit auction | Spring and Autumn Period, Bronze
Spring and Autumn Period, Bronze Phoenix Palace Lamp - This lamp features an exquisite and structurally complex design with rich layering. The top consists of a circular dish with a flat, broad surface and a central aperture for holding a candle or wick, surrounded by a slightly raised rim to contain oil or wax drippings. Below the dish, an openwork support is fashioned in the form of two symmetrical phoenixes, each with a slightly raised head, a downward-curving beak, and an elegant S-shaped neck. The wings are rendered in fluid lines, while the trailing tail feathers descend in graceful curves, creating a dynamic and ethereal posture. The phoenixes are connected by a central column providing stable support. The lower section comprises a tall, trumpet-shaped foot decorated with raised horizontal fillets of concise design, terminating in a circular ring foot that is steady and weighty. The entire piece is cast in bronze, covered with a mottled green patina that has naturally permeated the surface, with patches of reddish-brown metal visible in places, imparting an authentic, time-worn archaic character. Casting traces are visible along the rim of the dish and in the fine details of the phoenixes, demonstrating superb craftsmanship and flowing lines that reveal the advanced bronze-casting standards of the Spring and Autumn period.
