Bidspirit auction | Spring and Autumn Period, Bronze
Spring and Autumn Period, Bronze Gold and Silver Inlaid Zhi - This zhi wine vessel presents a dignified, archaic form with a small, slightly flared mouth, a constricted neck, sloping shoulders, a generously drooping belly, and a ring foot. The overall silhouette is full and rounded with flowing yet powerful lines. Two small, symmetrical loop handles are applied to the shoulders, proportionally refined and adding both functional grip and visual balance to the vessel. The surface is decorated with gold and silver inlay techniques. The neck is encircled by a band of silver-inlaid inscriptions or geometric patterns, with hair-fine silver threads embedded in the bronze surface still faintly discernible after millennia. The belly is divided into upper and lower registers of gold-inlaid designs, likely stylized taotie masks or scrolling cloud motifs. The gold remains vivid and lustrous, creating a striking contrast against the bronze ground that is opulent yet solemn. A raised horizontal fillet at the center of the belly elegantly separates the decorative bands, lending clear structural layering. The vessel is covered in a mottled patina of green and brown corrosion, with patches of the original coppery metal visible beneath. The rust has naturally permeated the surface, and the thick, mellow patina enhances the weathered, archaic gravitas characteristic of Spring and Autumn period bronzes. The piece demonstrates superb craftsmanship, with ornate and luxurious decoration in which the interplay of gold and silver inlay against the ancient bronze fully reveals the advanced casting and decorative standards of the period.
