Qianlong Period, Qing Dynasty, Carved Polychrome Round Box with Eight Immortals - The medallion on the lid presents an elegant gathering amid mountains and waters: gnarled pines twist upward in bold, sinewy forms; drifting clouds nestle among distant peaks. A stone bridge spans a valley stream, where an elder leans upon the railing in serene repose. Beneath the pines, others gather—unrolling scrolls to discourse on the Way, attending with offerings, or plucking strings to savour music—amidst well-ordered dwellings and quiet courtyards, conjuring the harmony of a hidden paradise on earth. The composition deftly layers depth: foreground pines rise lush; midground bridge, pavilion and figures stand clear; background mountains recede in rolling ranges. Carving establishes spatial recession, translating painterly brushwork into lacquer—incised lines as fine as ink strokes, polished surfaces soft as washes, capturing vast vistas within a small frame. The exterior sides are equally masterful: arranged in registers, scrolling lotus unfurls alongside the Eight Auspicious Symbols and divine figures, representing the Eight Immortals—Li Tieguai, Han Zhongli, Zhang Guolao, Lü Dongbin, He Xiangu, Lan Caihe, Han Xiangzi, and Cao Guojiu—each with their emblem, stance, and distinctive spirit, encircling the vessel to symbolize reverent longevity, universal blessing, and fortune as high as the heavens. The ground is enriched with geometric diaper patterns—tortoise-shell, key-fret, lozenge—dense yet uncluttered, setting off the principal motifs while adding rich texture and splendour.
