Qing Qianlong Reign: Carved Cinnabar Lacquer Tea Tray with Eight Treasures Pattern - Fashioned throughout in the tihong (carved red lacquer) technique, the piece was built by repeatedly applying cinnabar lacquer over the core, accumulating into a substantial thickness before being incised with keen blades — depths perfectly judged and strata distinctly rendered. The lacquer retains a pure, rich crimson, vivid as coagulated cinnabar; age has only deepened its subdued, luminous glow, radiating quiet opulence. Carving is assured and masterful: strokes poised, transitions rounded and seamless, recesses uniformly smoothed and polished to a velvety finish — epitomizing the Qianlong court ideal of “workmanship never too fine, materials never too choice.” Exterior surfaces are covered in scrolling lotus: vines interlace, blooms succeed one another, flowing in graceful, unbroken rhythm — dense yet unconfused, lines fluid and supple. Set among them appear the Eight Auspicious Symbols: Wheel, Conch, Parasol, Canopy, Lotus, Vase, Golden Fish, and Endless Knot — each distinctly formed, perfectly placed, and harmonizing with the blossoms to convey blessings of fortune, longevity, health, and perpetual prosperity. The interior and upper surface bear a finely wrought tortoise-shell diaper pattern, neatly arrayed like a field of stars — adding subtle texture while balancing the ornate exterior in elegant contrast, simplicity and richness enhancing one another. Within this single vessel, lotus signifies purity untainted; each emblem confers its own benediction; the boat form echoes wishes for smooth passage and safe voyage. Meaning converges in every detail — a refined implement for tea, and a profound vessel of prayer for good fortune and grace.
