Bidspirit auction | Tianhuang Stone Seal — From
Tianhuang Stone Seal — From the Collection of Mei Lanfang - The seal’s side bears a shallow relief of plum blossoms in graceful silhouette: gnarled boughs twist and reach, branches strong and supple—some sweeping sideways, others rising heavenward—dotted with buds and blossoms, fully open or still closed, alive with quiet grace. Carving is delicate and shallow, emulating painterly brushwork rather than deep incision; bends flow like cursive script, blooms hover as faint fragrance lingers, evoking the timeless poetic line: “Sparse shadows slant across clear shallow water.” The plum is purity’s flower—braving frost, unrivalled by other blooms, iron-stemmed and ice-hearted, fragrant and self-possessed—the enduring symbol of noble integrity. Adorning a seal thus goes beyond beauty: it declares resolve, unyielding virtue captured in stone. An incised inscription reads: “Autumn of Renwu, carved by Mei Lanfang”—characters firm, elegant, and composed, mirroring the man himself, in perfect harmony with stone and motif. Renwu is 1942: in his prime, amid war, he remained in Shanghai, growing his beard in steadfast refusal to perform for the puppet regime. His unshakeable honour matches the plum’s spirit—standing alone, unbowed by cold.
