Bidspirit auction | Ming Dynasty, Ancient Bronze Ritual
Ming Dynasty, Ancient Bronze Ritual Bell - Cast in bronze, this ritual bell has a gracefully tapering, bell-shaped body flaring to a distinct rim, with balanced, pleasing proportions. The bronze surface bears a rich, deep patina of dark aged tone. The exterior is decorated with horizontal bands of ornament: a border of repeated beading and pendant leaves near the rim, above which runs an encircling band of inscribed characters in regular script, crisply rendered. The handle is cast in the form of a five-pronged gilded vajra, with prongs symmetrically splayed at the apex; the shaft is detailed with a ceremonial face, encircled by carved lotus petals and scrolling foliage, all finished in bright gilding that stands vividly against the dark bronze body. The bell retains its original fitted case, formed in two halves modelled like a lotus bud, secured with metal clasps and lined in red fabric; an accompanying textured cushion shows accumulated patina and age. The casting is precise, decoration formally arranged, the whole conveying solemn dignity and ancient presence.
