Bidspirit auction | Tang Dynasty, Auspicious Beast Pattern

Tang Dynasty, Auspicious Beast Pattern Pot - Broad, flared mouth above a gracefully tapering neck, swelling gently to full, rounded shoulders and a plump, pendulous body, rising to a tall, flared pedestal foot; the silhouette flows in soft, harmonious curves throughout. Centered on the belly is a prominent raised roundel enclosing a relief-carved mythical beast in vigorous posture, surrounded by scrolling foliage within a beaded border, its form rising naturally with the vessel’s contour. Below, radiating bands of upright lotus petals ascend the stem. The bronze is richly encrusted with age: warm golden-brown ground softly streaked with verdigris and sea-blue patina, deepened by smooth, accumulated wear that lends a heavy, mellow warmth to the surface.
