Spain 4 Escudos 1788 MM - KM-418a.1, Cal-315; King Charles III (1759-1788); Gold (.875), 13,35 g.; 30 mm. A choice, high-relief example from the final year of Charles III's reign. The portrait retains excellent detail in the King's wig and facial features, while the reverse heraldry is exceptionally sharp. Obverse: Features the armored and draped bust of King Charles III facing right. The legend reads: ”CAROL·III·D·G· HISP·ET IND·R·” with the date ”1788” positioned below. Reverse: Displays the crowned Royal Shield of Arms surrounded by the Collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The inscription reads: ”AUSPICE·DEO· IN·UTROQ·FELIX·” (Under the guidance of God, happy in both [worlds]). The denomination ”4” and the mint/assayer marks ”M· MM” are flanking the shield. Boasts a rich, saturated golden color with original luster remaining in the protected areas. XF
