Palestine 40 Para Token ND (ca. 1880's) - Haffner-CC-13A; Sultan: Abdul Hamid II (1876-1909); Brass, 23 mm; German Templers of Palestine; These tokens were issued by the German Templer Society, a pietistic Christian group that settled in Palestine in the late 19th century. Due to the chronic shortage of small-change Ottoman currency, the ”Centralcasse” in Jaffa issued its own private coinage for use within the colonies and with local merchants. A remarkably well-preserved specimen for this scarce brass issue. The details on the plow are crisp, and the surfaces show only light, honest circulation wear. Even, olive-gold brass surfaces with scattered dark toning spots characteristic of original, uncleaned tokens of this era. AU
