Rare: Biographic Letter from the Gaon Rabbi Yosef Levenstein, Av Beit Din of Szreńsk, Author of Dor Dor V'Dorshav Beautiful biographic letter from the gaon and superlative expert Rabbi Yosef Levenstein, av beit din of Szreńsk and author of the important and renowned sefer, Dor Dor V'Dorshav. Sent to R' David Maggid, author of Toldot Mishpachat Ginzburg. Szreńsk [next to Warsaw], 1899. To the best of our examination, letters from him have never been offered at auction. The letter discusses the lineage and the roots of the Ginzburg family, and mentions names of many of the family's progenitors: ”As his father R' Binyamin Wolf, the av beit din of Metz, son-in-law of R' Mordechai, author of the Levushim.” Inter alia, he indicates a detail regarding the family connection sent to him by the Admo”r Rabbi Leibush Halperin of Berezan. Rabbi Levenstein also requests that the addressee send him the just recently published sefer entitled Toldot Mishpachat Ginzburg in exchange for another sefer from him, or for pay, despite his pointing out that he doesn't have much money ”and with all the letters I receive each day in shu”t or family history, may I be respectably and fully sustained, but not with wealth ...” Refer to the Hebrew catalog text for a brief biography of Rabbi Yosef Levenstein, av beit din of Szreńsk.
