Miriam Cabessa - Untitled, 2012. Oil on Bristol board, framed 50/70 cm Signed Winner of the Ministry of Culture Lifetime Achievement Award in Visual Arts 2022. Mariam Kabsa was born in Morocco, raised in Israel, and has lived and worked in New York City since 2000. Her slow-motion painting has gained international recognition since 1997, when she represented Israel at the Venice Biennale. Over the past two decades, she has avoided using brushes, choosing to add marks with objects and her body. The artist's breath dictates the rhythm of movement on the canvas, and it serves as the painting's brush. Her images range from organic to mechanistic with surfaces that are hand-crafted in their optical form and move into digital serenity. Her spectacular paintings, which appear as if untouched by human hands, are in fact created from a close, almost intimate contact with the canvas, with emotion and proximity. Kabesa’s paintings embody her precise control, her material sensitivity and virtuoso painterly ability.
