Shira Gepstein Moshkovich - Seamstress, 2017. Oil on canvas 154/152 cm Signed Shira Gepstein-Moshkowitz (b. 1978) is a multidisciplinary Israeli artist, working in painting, sculpture and installation. Her work ranges from figurative to expressive, and combines engagement with the body, memory, family and emotional and political spaces. Gepstein studied at the Art School at Beit Berl and graduated in 2004. Since then, she has exhibited in major museums and galleries in Israel, including the Israel Museum, the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, the Ein Harod Art Museum and the Biennale for Art and Design. She is also a founder of the collaborative gallery “Benyamin”, and a member of the “Maya” and “Hanina” galleries in Tel Aviv. Her work combines a highly charged pictorial language with a material and sculptural approach. She describes herself as an “obsessive collector of images” – images that she collects, disassembles and reconstructs into scenes that are foreign, tender and sometimes unsettling. Recurring motifs in her work include women, animals, physical and emotional carrying, and a body in a state of transition or burden. In recent years, she has received wide recognition, including the Lottery Council Prize for Culture and the Arts and the Ministry of Culture’s 2024 Encouragement of Creativity Award. Alongside her work as an artist, she also teaches and runs “The Drawing Studio”, a school for classical drawing and painting.
