Bidspirit auction | Paul Cezanne (1839-1906)
Paul Cezanne (1839-1906) - Card Players (after), 1st half of the 20th century. Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: approx. 39 x 31 cm, 47 x 55 cm (with frame) Condition: The canvas has been restored, with paint loss repaired. The reverse features numerous reinforcing patches (double-pointed painting) and the handwritten inventory or auction number ”1633.” The condition of the canvas suggests a rich history. The work is an old copy of one of the most groundbreaking compositions in the history of modern art. In The Card Players, Cézanne moved away from anecdotal depictions of genre scenes in favor of monumentalizing figures and analyzing form. The presented copy was executed with considerable painterly freedom. Although it differs from the original, it well captures the weight of the composition and the color palette (ochres, blues, deep browns) characteristic of Post-Impressionism. The numerous repairs visible on the reverse attest to the painting's decades-long value as a valuable collection item.
