Jerzy Duda-Gracz (1941-2004) - Yom Kippur, 1966. Oil on canvas mounted on wood, 41 × 21 cm + frame Signed and dated on the reverse; also bears the artist's inscription with the title (”YOM KIPPUR... 21 × 41 cm... 1966”) and an inscription in Hebrew. The label of the framing studio (New York, Madison Avenue) has been preserved. The title ”Yom Kippur” (Day of Atonement) directs interpretation toward themes of the sacred, self-examination, and collective memory. This early work, from the mid-1960s, demonstrates the artist's interest in the human condition and the ”theater” of liminal experiences, before his visual language matured into his later, widely recognized satire and deformation in realistic costume. Duda-Gracz remains one of the most important commentators on Polish postwar reality; at the same time, he also took up religious and morality themes in larger cycles (including works on sacred themes).
