The figure stands in front of an old portolan chart with the inscription ”ITER in Ignotum”—”journey into the unknown.” Hanging on either side of the head are pages from old books, referencing the mythological monsters Scylla and Charybdis. This motif, present in Homer's Odyssey, symbolizes a choice between two dangers. Red and black threads connect the map to the heroine's body, suggesting a psychological journey and the tension between extremes. The sea star and the hanging tablets emphasize the theme of wandering and balancing between danger and the chance of salvation. The artist juxtaposes ancient, medieval, and Renaissance traditions (texts by Alciato, Aeneas, Kircher, Homer) with his own symbolism. Psychologically, the map and the journey to the East symbolize the process of individualization and the search for identity—a risky, yet necessary, task for self-discovery.
