The reverse bears numerous reinforcing patches (dot doubling) and the handwritten inventory or auction number ”1633.” The condition of the canvas suggests a rich history. The work is an old copy of one of the most groundbreaking compositions in the history of modern art. In The Card Players, Cézanne moved away from the anecdotal depiction of genre scenes in favor of monumentalizing figures and analyzing form.
