Franz Hogenberg George Braun - Aldenburgum Holsatiae - Etching on paper (16th Century) - Aldenburgum Holsatiae , or Stade, from the collection Civitates Orbis Terrarum by Braun Hogenberg. Precious hand-colored aquatint, hand watercolored, showing a view of Stade , indicated in the title as ” Aldenburgum Holsatie ”. The table illustrates in detail the view of the German city in Southern Saxony. Good conditions, with some visible stains. The original plate is mounted on a cardboard passepartout (33.5 x 49 cm). Not signed. Civitates Orbis Terrarum ( Atlas of the Cities of the World ) was the second oldest printed atlas in the history of world cartography and the first atlas totally dedicated to topographical views . The first volume of this collection was published in Cologne in 1572; the following in 1575, 1581, 1588, and 1598. The sixth and final volume appeared in 1617, just before the extensive devastation wreaked by the Thirty Years’ War.
