[ART] - Claude Monet: Grief and Finances – A Letter in Mourning - MONET Claude - Autograph letter signed, dated “Argenteuil 23 sept.bre 73” by the French painter and founder of Impressionism painting. During his long career, he was the most consistent and prolific practitioner of Impressionism's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions of nature, especially as applied to “plein air” (outdoor) landscape painting. The term ”Impressionism” is derived from the title of his painting “Impression, soleil levant”, which was first exhibited in the so-called ”exhibition of rejects” of 1874, an exhibition initiated by Monet and like-minded artists as an alternative to the Salon. Returning from a visit to the painter Camille Pissarro (1830 - 1903), he informs his friend about some sad news: “…Une triste nouvelle attendait ma femme a son retour de Pontoise: son pere est mort hier. Nous sommes naturellement obliges de prendre le deuil et je me trouve dans un moment de gene. Je serais bien content si vous pouviez obtenir le payement de Mr [Thedore] Duret…”.
