[LITERATURE] - “FROM SPRING TO WINTER: CHATEAUBRIAND’S MELANCHOLY REFLECTIONS” - CHATEAUBRIAND François-Rene de - Beautiful autograph letter signed, dated “5 Mai 1835” by the French writer and politician, French ambassador. Descended from an old aristocratic family from Brittany, Chateaubriand was a royalist by political disposition. In an age when large numbers of intellectuals turned against the Church, he authored the “Genie du christianisme” in defense of the Catholic faith. His works include the autobiography “Memoires d'Outre-Tombe” (Memoirs from Beyond the Grave), published posthumously in 1849–1850. Peer of France in 1815, he was ambassador to Berlin and London, then Minister of the Foreign affairs and ambassador in Rome. A political orator and publicist, he exerted a considerable influence on French literature. The note and the verses of his correspondent found the poet very unwell and he could not have the honor of responding immediately: “…j’ai lu ce charmant recueil: heureux, Monsieur, qui comme vous peut se consoler avec les souvenirs du Printemps et pleurer sur les tristes jours de l’Automne. Malheureusement j’en suis a l’hiver…”. 1 p. In-8. Ink faded.
