[LITERATURE] - Freeman Wills Crofts – The Engineer of Classic Crime A Signed Letter and Photograph by the Creator of Inspector French and Master of Railway Mysteries - CROFTS Freeman Wills - Typed letter signed, dated “14th January 1950” by the Irish engineer and mystery author, remembered best for the character of Inspector Joseph French. A railway engineer by training, Crofts introduced railway themes into many of his stories, which were notable for their intricate planning. Crofts addresses Mr. Stone: “…I am giving myself the pleasure of sending you a copy of my new book on the Gospels, and though I don’t know wether or not this is in your line. There was some hold up about it and for some weeks I could not get a copy, but now it is in the shops again (…) There will certainly be room for a life of Austin Freeman, somewhat on the lines of Dickson Carr’s Life of Conan Doyle. Would you not do this? You seem to have a vast amount of valuable information about the man, perhaps enough for the purpose? (…) There was a play of Eden Philpott’s on the radio recently.
