She won the Somerset Maugham Award in 1955 for her second poetry collection, A Way of Looking. Jennings pens a poem on suicide, beginning: ”They say there was no plan. Why are they sure? / Apparently the police have evidence, / one clue, they think, is that she had with her / new clothes, just bought. Now who would lay their plans / for death, and then go in a shop and buy / an anorak and shoes? Yes, they insist / that human beings who elect to die / do not behave with such a curious twist”. 1 p.
