[LITERATURE] - Sax Rohmer – Rare Lines from the Father of Fu Manchu A 1913 Autograph Letter from Manila, Full of Wit, Longing, and Literary Insight - WARD Arthur S., a.k.a. Sax Rohmer - Rare autograph letter signed, dated “April 17, 1913”by the English novelist. He is best remembered for his series of novels featuring the master criminal Fu Manchu. The first three Fu Manchu books were published in the four years between 1913 and 1917; but it was not until 1931 (some 14 years after the third book in the series) that Rohmer returned to the series with Daughter of Fu Manchu. The reason for the long interval was that Rohmer wanted to be rid of the series after The Si-Fan Mysteries. The first three books had been successfully filmed by Stoll in the twenties as a pair of serials. To General Scriven, wishing him “good health and long life” and congratulations on his new job: “…”I think the job is to be congratulated as well as you. I have just been over to Griffiths where I had a quoff from that fine tankard, the whiskey bottle that he said you had presented him while in Washington. Of his writing activities, Ward continues: ”I am still wielding a few pen scratches but not much local work. I find the States periodicals are the best medium.
