[MUSIC] - “VERDI, GHISLANZONI, AND RICORDI: SOLIDARITY AMONG OPERA GIANTS” - VERDI Giuseppe - Autograph letter signed, dated “Genova 2 del 92 [2.1.1892]” by the celebrated Italian composer. Addressed to the librettist Antonio Ghislanzoni (1824 - 1893), who, among others, wrote the libretto of Aida for Verdi and translated “Don Carlo” into Italian for him. Ghislanzoni, a faithful friend and collaborator of the Maestro, who had been suffering for some time, had taken refuge in his hermitage in Caprino Bergamasco where he was visited by his friends and also received financial help. In this affectionate letter, Verdi thanks his correspondent for the missive he received: “…benche mi rechi notizie poco consolanti di voi e della vostra famiglia…”. Then certainly referring to Ghislanzoni's pressing economic needs, he continues: “…Vi accludo una letterina per Giulio [Ricordi], la quale se vi puo' togliere per il momento da qualche imbarazzo, servitevene e mandatela a Giulio…”. It should be remembered, that there were many professional relationships between Ricordi and Ghislanzoni, not the least of which was the editing on behalf of that one of the “Gazzetta Musicale di Milano” from 1866 to 1872. Verdi then gives news about himself and his family: “…Noi pure siamo un poco ammalati. Peppina [Giuseppina Strepponi] di catarro, e di nause; io di una forte tosse che mi rompe lo stomaco.
