[MUSIC] - “WAGNER FROM NAPLES: DREAMS OF TRIUMPH IN PARIS” - WAGNER Richard - Beautiful autograph letter signed, dated “Villa d’Angri, Posillipo, Neapel, 16 Juli 1880” by the German composer, dramatist and conductor. Wagner had traveled to Italy in the early 1880s both to enjoy the more temperate climate there and to find inspiration for the staging of his last opera, “Parsifal.”: this work, sketched out in broad outline in 1877, completed in the musical part in 1879, still took a long time to prepare, so that it could not be performed until 1882. Interesting letter written by the musician less than three years after his death, addressed to Carl Voltz. Wagner is pleased with him that even his early works continue to be in demand and successful. Wagner, however, expresses a wish that this would also happen in Paris (translated): “...I only beg you to have a watchful eye on Paris; this has every appearance that we may one day come to something positive as well....” Certainly Wagner had not forgotten the hostility of the French and the failure of his Paris premiere of “Tannhäuser” in 1861, but he certainly cared a great deal about his works being performed there as well.
