[SCIENCE AND MEDICINE] - “BETWEEN RAIN AND SCIENCE: THE EUROPEAN YOUTH OF ENRICO FERMI” - FERMI Enrico - Autograph letter signed, dated “Gottingen, 7. 6. 1923” by the Italian physicist, renowned for being the creator of the world's first artificial nuclear reactor, the Chicago Pile-1, and a member of the Manhattan Project. Fermi was awarded the 1938 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on induced radioactivity by neutron bombardment and for the discovery of transuranium elements. During his semester at the University of Gottingen, where he met Werner Heisenberg and Pascual Jordan, Fermi writes to his friend, fellow student at the Scuola Normale di Pisa, the Italian mathematician Luigi Fantappie (1901 - 1956): “…la vita che faccio qui presenta molta analogia con quella che facevo l’anno scorso a Pisa, e quindi puoi press’a poco immaginartela; mi sono comprato una nuova bicicletta, con la quale probabilmente a suo tempo, cioe tra un paio di mesi, tornero' in Italia pedalando. Qui e ancora abbastanza freddo, e piove quasi tuti i giorni, ma la gente fa finta di non accorgersene ed io, come tu sai, sono anfibio, e cosi e come se splendesse un limpido e tiepido sole primaverile; e si ha per di piu' il vantaggio che oltre che di Poincare, del governo di C… etc. si puo' parlar male anche del tempo…”. 1 p. 1/2.
