[ART] - Agostino Carracci: A Standing Dog — Later State - Rare Engraving - CARRACCI, Agostino - A standing dog facing left. [ca.1582-85, but quite later, 18th c. ] Original engraving, (157x122 mm); lower right, in the plate: A. Caraza f.; late state; with small margins; mounted on paper; in good condition. This particular engraving depicts a dog standing on the grass facing left, which was wrongly placed late in the author’s career by Bartsch: in fact, if compared with the “Study of a Dog” (1599-1560), it is obvious that in the 1590s drawing his skills were much more developed, which brings us to place this work earlier in his career. Agostino Carracci (Bologna, 1557-Parma, 1602) was an Italian painter and engraver, brother of Annibale and Ludovico Carracci. He was mostly considered for his engravings, not because he was lacking talent as a painter, but because of the inevitable comparison between him and his brother Annibale.
