First edition of Armenini's treatise on art, which opens by lamenting its recent decline; Armenini (1530-1609) was a painter of the Mannerist period, though by the time he wrote this work he was no longer an active artist but a priest near Faenza. As well as discussing his theory of painting, Armenini also describes the trials and tribulations of the profession of artist.
