[16], pp. 560. Rare French edition of the founding work of Medieval Western surgery, introducing al-Zahrawi in Europe. The treatise covers anatomy, bloodletting, cauterization, drugs, anesthetics, wounds, fractures, ulcers, special diseases, and antidotes. Among de Chauliac’s treatments he described the use of bandages and he also believed pus from an infection was beneficial to the healing process. He describes surgical techniques such as intubation, tracheotomy, and suturing. De Chauliac’s Chirurgia was greatly influenced by Islamic scientists, and he references Ibn Sina often in the work, but also Ali ibn al-Abbas al-Majusi, Al-Razi and especially Abu al-Qasim Al-Zahrawi, who De Chauliac considers «the restorer of surgery». Guy de Chauliac cites main Al-Zahrawi’s work, the Kitab al-Tasrif (كتاب التصريف لمن عجز عن التأليف) over 200 times. The surgery of Al-Zaharawi became firmly grafted on Europe after the time of Guy de Chauliac. For his close relationship with Arab surgery and medicine, the French scholar Boyer, considers Chauliac as «the last Arabian surgeon of Middle Ages». Condition: Some traces of use, but a good copy.
