[SCIENCE AND MEDICINE] - [MONTMORT Pierre Rémond de] (1678 – 1719) - [Early Probability Theory – Montmort’s Essay On Games Of Chance – 1713] - “Essay d’analyse sur les jeux de hazard” Paris, Jacques Quillau, 1713. 4to (26.5 x 19.8 cm); engraved device, woodcut initials, 4 folding plates; some toning and spotting. Contemporary speckled calf, richly gilt spine, minor worming, light wear. A very good example. Brunet III, 1870. Second edition of one of the foundational works of probability theory, first published in 1708. Montmort applies combinatorial analysis to games of chance, notably the card game treize, establishing principles central to early probability theory. The work circulated anonymously, though its authorship was widely known. This edition includes important correspondence with Nicolaus and Johann Bernoulli. Montmort’s treatise secured his reputation among contemporary mathematicians and represents a landmark in the mathematical study of probability. •> This lot is located in and ships from the UK.
