Very rare French edition of the Italian translation of Ovid’s «Remedies for love» printed by Pierre Roux. Remedia Amoris (“Love’s Cure” or “The Remedies for Love”) [written c. 2 AD] is a poem in Latin by Roman poet Ovid. Ovid offers advice and strategies to avoid being hurt by love feelings, or to fall out of love, with a stoic overtone. Ovid’s goal was to provide, for men and women alike, advice on how to escape safely from an unhappy love affair - emotional bondage - without falling into the tragic ends of such legendary figures as Dido or Medea represented in Ovid’s other fundamental work devoted to the love letters of ancient heroines, bound with this volume. Among the techniques to avoid love, the author suggests of keeping busy; travelling; avoiding wine and love poetry (!); and concentrating on the beloved’s defects rather than their strong points.
