Royal folio (407 x 268 mm), contemporary Cologne blind-stamped calf over wooden boards (Kyriss 96, EBDB w001443, Schrotplatten) brass cornerpieces and other hardware strap (rebound preserving much of original boards, lacking one strap and most of original hardware), ff. 395 leaves (of 396, title text from first leaf cut out and mounted to new blank). Dedicatory letter by Petrus Albinianus Decius to cardinal Francesco Piccolomini. Two columns, 68 lines, Gothic types 10*:58G, 11:180G, 16:92G. Larger penwork initials in red and blue, smaller red and blue penwork initials, red capital strokes. Precious and beautiful Venetian edition Baysio’s commentary of Gratian’s Decretum, printed by Aldus’s father-in-law. First published in Strasbourg in 1473, the Rosarium decretorum was reprinted several times in the 15th century. The present one is the fifth edition and the first book printed by Andrea Torresani in 1495, the starting year of his long adventure with Aldo Manuzio: although the Venetian printer was associated with Aldus, he continued to print theological and legal books until 1507, especially to satisfy the request of the university of Padua. Guido de Baysio (middle of the thirteenth century-1313) was an Italian canonist. The probable place of his birth is Reggio, where he also studied law under Guido de Suzaria. Here he became, successively, doctor and professor of canon law and also obtained an ecclesiastical benefice as canon. In 1296 Pope Boniface VIII appointed Baysio Archdeacon of Bologna, and chancellor of the University of Bologna. Here he at first taught canon law privately and later on became a public professor, a position he held for three years. Called to Avignon in 1304 he retained the dignity of archdeacon, held the office of papal chaplain, and also served in the Apostolic chancery until his death. His chief work was this commentary on the Decretum of Gratian, which he wrote about the year 1300, a collection of older glossaries, not contained in the Glossa Ordinaria, and principally compiled from Huguccio.
