[SCIENCE AND MEDICINE] - ARGOLI Andrea (1570 - 1659) - A Rare Scientific Voice: Argoli On Astronomical Revolutions - Extremely rare autograph letter signed, dated Padova 14.1.1650, by the Italian mathematician. 1 p. in-4. Argoli addresses an unnamed correspondent, sending him some writings concerning “…le figure delle revoluzioni degli anni…”. Argoli may refers to his “Astronomicorum libri tres…” (Padua, 1650). At the date of this letter, Argoli was actively engaged in the production of his most mature scientific works, in a context where astronomy and astrology were still closely intertwined. His reflections on the “revolutions of the years” likely relate to calendrical and predictive calculations, a field in which he enjoyed considerable authority in Italian academic circles. Autograph material by Argoli is exceptionally scarce, particularly when directly connected to a known publication. The possible link with the Bentivoglio milieu further enhances the document’s prestige, situating it within an elite network of scientific and noble patronage typical of 17th-century Italy. This letter appeared on the 11th November 1868 Sotheby’s sale, described as being addressed possibly to a member of the Bentivoglio family, from where the letter comes from.
