[HISTORY] - CLARKE, duc de Feltre Henri Jacques Guillaume (1765 - 1818) - The Bourbon Court In Exile During The Hundred Days - Extremely important letter dated “Gand, le 14 mai 1815” addressed to Felton Elwell Hervey-Bathurst, written from the Bourbon court’s exile headquarters in Ghent, at a pivotal moment during the Hundred Days. The recipient was an officer in the British army, who lost an arm in the Battle of Douro (Second Battle of Porto) in 1809 and was promoted Colonel in 1814. He served with the Duke of Wellington during the Waterloo campaign and was Wellington’s representative during the negotiations for the surrender of Paris. He was also aide de camp to the Prince Regent and was awarded a number of medals for service in battle. “I have the honour of writing to Mr Harvey to ask him to forward to His Excellency the Marshal, the Duke of Wellington, the enclosed copy of a report drawn up by Mr de la Bourdonnaye or his officers concerning Philippeville. A report from the frontier states that at Guernay there are more than 2,000 men ready to join the Royal Army stationed in the vicinity of France, and that a further 6,000 near Valenciennes, Landreuns and Le Cateau will join them; the National Guard of the district of Avesnes has refused to march.
