[HISTORY] - SOULT, duc de Dalmatie, Marshal of the Empire, Nicolas (1769 - 1851) - Modesty And Honour In The Egyptian Campaign - Fine autograph letter signed 3 pp., 4to, Alexandrie, 2 Thermidor, an 8 [21 July, 1800], to the future Marshal Oudinot, concerning the writer’s failure to receive a sabre d’honneur from the Government. ”You seem surprised, my dear Oudinot, not to find my name among those of the generals to whom the Government has just awarded swords of honor. I am less surprised than you, having done little to merit such a great testament to national magnificence. I could not have hoped to see myself alongside the great men whose actions are about to be immortalized. Marble will bear their names for posterity (decree of 8 Messidor), and in a few years, mine will scarcely be found inscribed on some old records, or in an apothecary’s pharmacy. I will be left with my own medicine, and I will say in the end, all is for the best. The esteem of a few friends will remain with me, and my ambition will be satisfied.” •> This lot is located in and ships from Switzerland.
