CARDINAL CARLO ANDREA FERRARI - HANDWRITTEN LETTER AND ENVELOPE - Andrea Carlo Ferrari, popularly known as Cardinal Ferrari, (Lalatta di Palanzano, 13 August 1850 – Milan, 2 February 1921) was an Italian Catholic cardinal and archbishop. Former bishop of Guastalla and Como, he was later metropolitan archbishop of Milan from 1894 to 1921.[1][2] Defined by contemporaries as an excellent pastor and refined theologian, he was later accused of modernism: this brought him into conflict with Pope Pius X, whom he himself had initially supported when he was Patriarch of Venice. Relations between the two finally softened in 1912, but Cardinal Ferrari managed to recover good offices with the Holy See only with the election of Benedict XV to the throne of Peter.[3][4] The cause for his canonization opened in 1963, at the end of which he obtained the title of Servant of God. Proclaimed venerable in 1975 by Paul VI (one of his successors to the episcopal chair of Milan), he was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1987.
