Pacific Northwest Carved Wood Bear Mask, Wesley - Native American/First Nations, British Columbia, Canada, made and signed by Andy Tsu-Ech Wesley (b. 1961) of the Gitksun cultural group, ca. late 20th century CE. A handsome cedar helmet mask in the form of a bear, with dramatic fur lining thetop of the head and the back of the mask. The face is painted with bright, bold colors - deep blue outlined in white around the red, white, and black eyes, a black face with red and white nostrils and ears, and a huge mouth, partially open, andfull of big teeth with sharp canines, painted bright white inside a thick band of red lips. The signature is on the interior. Size: 10.25” L x 10.25” W x 12.45” H (26 cm x 26 cm x 31.6 cm); 18.95” H (48.1 cm) on included custom stand. Andy Tsu-Ech Wesley was born in Prince Rupert, British Columbian, Canada, in 1961. He is a member of the Gitksun cultural group (also Gitxsan, Gitksan), part of the Tsimshianic language group, who live inland along the Skeena River. They are a matrilineal society comprised of four clans, each represented by a different animal. This artist's specialty is wooden masks carved in the Haida style.
