PNW Rattle - Native American, North America, Pacific Northwest (USA and Canada), Kwakwaka'wakw tribe, ca. first half of the 20th century CE. A beautiful chieftain rattle depicting a stylized anthropomorphic face, hand-carved from hardwood and finely-detailed ina characteristic Northwest Coast style. The rattle portion displays an intriguing guise with concentric ringed eyes surrounded by emerald-green pigment, a rounded nose with pronounced nostrils, large arching eye brows, and a mouth whichappears to be whistling - painted red and outlined in black - with a black brow and pale-orange mouth. The rattle itself is filled with several rattle balls (inserted by removing the back half of the head) which emit a bright sound whenjostled around. A lengthy handle with a flat base projects from the bottom of the rattle and is incredibly smooth from repeated use. Custom museum-quality display stand included.
