Locati LLC is proud to present American Furniture and Silver from the Collection of C Thomas Attix, Jr., who was a lifelong collector of American material culture with a particular fondness of furniture, coin silver, and Oriental rugs. His collection reflects his interest in the Delaware Valley, with an emphasis on mid 18th through early 19th century silversmiths and figured hardwoods vetted by his discerning eye for form and surface. Among the highlights are a Thomas Stretch Philadelphia clock, a collection of figured maple furniture, and silver by noted makers such as Joseph Richardson Sr. and Richard Humphreys.

New Jersey Girlhood Pictorial Needlework House Sampler

A New Jersey Girlhood Silk on Linen Pictorial Needlework House Sampler, Dated 1816. Wrought by Esther Holmes Perrine (b. 1807 Perrineville, New Jersey).

The upper third of the needlework depicting a large two story house with gable roof and chimneys to either end, the house is set on a green lawn with sheep and other farm animals, flanked by a fence, willow and cedar trees. Below is a vignette with a hunter, dog and peacock and three other vignettes depicting Biblical stories entitled,  'Cain slaying his brother Abel'; 'In Adams fall we sined all'; and 'Abraham going to offer up his son Issac'.

There are thirteen lines of text to the center right inscribed,

"This I do to let you see / What pains my parents / Takes with me / Then if they so much / Pains do take / Let not their paine / Be spent in vain / But let me thus improve / My mind lamb / And like the little ants / Let innocence my life adorn / And I will bless the day / That ever I was born".

The inscription panel lower center inscribed, "Esther H. Perrine's / sampler done in the / 9th year of her age / instructed / 1816 / by Eliza Ogborn". All within a floral and vine border.

In a 19th century lemon gilt and gesso frame.

Dimensions: Sight 18 x 15 3/4in; Frame 22 3/4 x 20 3/4in.

Provenance: Property from the Collection of C. Thomas Attix Jr., East Windsor, New Jersey.


Condition:

Framed and glazed. Not examined out of the frame. General fading throughout. Discolorations and toning to linen ground. Marks, wear, rubbing and losses to the frame.
