Philadelphia Style Comb-Back Windsor Armchair, 20th Century - A Philadelphia Style Comb-Back Windsor Armchair, 20th Century After a documented example, Circa 1730-1740. Mixed wood. Dimensions: Height 46in; width 23 1/4in; depth of seat 14 1/2in; seat height 17in. Provenance: From the Dorothea & Tom Buckner Estate. Dotty (Dorothea) and Tom Buckner began collecting Early American painted primitive furniture and accessories in 1979 and over the next 22 years they were regular buyers from a number of respected Bucks County, Pennsylvania antique dealers. Footnote: A period example is thoroughly discussed and examined in Charles Santore's, 'The Windsor Style in America', the author believes that chairs belonging to this group are among the earliest examples produced by Philadelphia craftsmen working in a ”recognizably American style” and a ”prototype for all subsequent Windsors in the American Style”.
