Pair of Philadelphia Painted Windsor Chairs, John Brietnall Ackley, Circa 1800 - A Pair of Philadelphia Gray-Painted Bamboo-Turned Balloon Back Windsor Chairs, John Brietnall Ackley, Circa 1800 Mixed wood, nine-spindle back over a shaped seat, the legs joined by an H-stretcher. Each branded stamp 'I. B. ACKLEY' to the underside of seat. (2) Dimensions: Height 37 3/4in; width 16 1/2in; depth of seat 14 1/2in; seat height 17in. Provenance: Property from the Naylor Estate, Malvern, Pennsylvania. Footnote:  John Brietnall Ackley (American, 1763-1827) is recorded working at 103 N. Front St.; 3 Mulberry St.;13 Elfreth's Alley; and 152 N. Front St. in Philadelphia. Literature: Charles Santore, The Windsor Style in America, Philadelphia, PA: Running Press Book Publishers, 1981, pp. 256. Condition: Structurally sound. Retaining an old painted surface with layers of previous paint history. Heavy wear, flaking, chips and small losses throughout. Each chair has lost some height with rebuilding to the front legs, approximately 1inch.
