EMOTIONAL PLEA FROM THE RABBIS OF TUNIS ASKING SIR MOSES MONTEFIORE TO RELIEVE THE SUFFERING OF A RELATIVE, JOSEPH MONTEFIORE OF TUNIS. 1870. Letter to Sir Moses Montefiore appealing for financial aid for one of his relatives, Joseph Montefiore of Tunis. The letter is signed by the Rabbis of Tunis, including Chief Rabbi Daniel Kartozo, and includes several lines signed by members of the Montefiore family of Tunis. Rabbi Daniel Kartozo (d. 1872), served as Dayan of the Portuguese Jewish community of Tunis, before being appointed Chief Rabbi ‘Chacham Bashi’ in 1868. 2 sides. 21.5 x 27 cm. Condition fair – good.
