Talmud Bavli with commentaries of Rashi and Tosefoth, Piskei Tosefoth and the Rambam’s commentary on the Mishna. Venice, Daniel Bomberg, 1520. First complete printed edition of the Talmud, and first ever print edition of Massechta Sotah.
This first edition of the Talmud set the standard layout of the page for all future editions (aside from very minor changes), as well as creating a standardised text of the Talmud that is generally followed in later prints.
A RARE TALMUD VOLUME
This first printed edition of the Talmud is very scarce, and this particular volume – Massechta Sotah - printed for the first time in this edition, is particularly rare among early printings of Talmud tractates.
RARE ILLUSTRATION IN THIS VOLUME
Rashi’s commentary on page 43a of this volume includes the only illustration or diagram appearing anywhere in this edition of the Talmud. In other places where such drawings were to be included, a blank space appears, apparently to be filled in after printing. A number of research studies have been published on the subject of these diagrams.
This volume contains many short marginal notes in an early hand.
