Rabbi Shem Tov Gaguin, born in Jerusalem, studied under Rabbi Yaakov Abulafia and ordained as Rabbi by Rabbi Chaim Berlin. Dayan in Cairo (1913) and Rabbi of the Spanish and Portuguese community in Manchester (1920), later also serving as Av beth Din of the Spannish and Portuguese community in London. His principal work is Kesser Shem Tov – a seven volume study of the customs and prayer texts of the different Sephardic and Oriental Jewish communities, and their sources.
