KPM PLAQUE 19C AFTER GERRIT DOU SCHOOLMASTER

Luminous 19th century KPM porcelain plaque after Gerrit Dou depicting "An Old Schoolmaster Cutting His Pen" in an ornate gold frame, plaque measures 9.5in W x 12in H ( 24 cm W 31cm H) with frame 17in W by 19.5 in H (43 cm W x 50 cm H) The reverse side is impressed with the scepter mark above “KPM”

The original painting by Dou was completed in 1671. Gerrit Dou (7 April 1613 – 9 February 1675), also known as Gerard Douw or Dow, was a Dutch Golden Age painter, whose small, highly polished paintings are typical of the Leiden fijnschilders. He specialized in genre scenes and is noted for his trompe-l'œil "niche" paintings and candlelit night scenes with strong chiaroscuro. He was a student of Rembrandt.
