RUSSIAN GILT ICON 3 HANDS MADONNA
Blue Madonna with three hands Russian icon Mary and Jesus on wood gilt measures, 10.5 in W x 11 in H
This icon depicts Mary holding the Child in her arms, but three hands are seen. The Russian icon is based on the legend according to which Giovanni Damasceno was condemned to the cutting of his hand by the emperor Leo III. Giovanni, after being sentenced, began to pray to the icon of the Madonna for his hand to be returned. When this happened, in gratitude he applied a silver hand to the icon.
