1889 Veiled Prophet Ball Die-Cut Invitation - Veiled Prophet Ball invitation, dated October 8, 1889. Elaborate die-cut invitation to the annual St. Louis event, consisting of an outer portion printed in various colors (including gilt) to resemble a pair of opera glasses, with eight folding sections of various designs, opening to a montage of seven different scenes from some imagined theatrical performance that includes scenes from various historic epochs around the world (Chinese imperial court, French royal court, etc). 14.5” x 13”. The 1889 ball was the first to be held at the St. Louis Exposition and Music Hall with significant expansion in attendance and sophistication of the performances involved.
